Branch Austin McCormick LLP is delighted to host in partnership with the Anglo-Australasian Lawyers Society and One Essex Court our distinguished guest speaker Lord Neuberger. Lord Neuberger was appointed to the Supreme Court as President in 2012. He now practises as an arbitrator, mediator and legal expert, and serves as a Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal and of the Singapore Court of Appeal.

Lord Neuberger will be discussing the significance of freedom of speech in our world today with Susan Lamb an international criminal lawyer and a justice of the criminal division of the Belize Supreme Court. This is an increasingly topical and controversial subject with the surge of so-called populism and the ongoing tensions between technological surveillance and the powers of the nation state over the individual. Both here and in many countries abroad the issue of how and when protest can take place and how that fits in with the Rule of Law remains contentious.

Hal Branch, a partner at the firm said, “We are excited to be hosting Lord Neuberger speaking on such an important issue. The firm are members of the Anglo-Australasian Lawyers Society and their chair, Anne Bodley, is to be commended on setting up this panel.” https://www.branchaustinmccormick.com/team/hal-branch/

Lord Neuberger has decided cases involving some of the most significant human rights issues and he has written and spoken extensively about free speech and privacy issues. His recent book Freedom of Speech in International Law (co-written with Amal Clooney) charts the minimum protections for free speech enshrined in international human rights law. Discounts will be offered to attendees at the event for the purchase of the book.

We are looking forward to what promises to be a thought-provoking discussion on the 31 July at 6pm.  The fact that the event is oversubscribed is a testament to Lord Neuberger’s legacy and the interest generated by a topic that fundamentally impacts on all our lives both at home and abroad.
