We recently spoke with our client, cybersecurity firm DynaRisk, to learn their top ten tips for staying safe online.

Cyber criminals are not only targeting large organisations. They are targeting everyday people, on a daily basis.

From fake delivery texts to hacked social media accounts and online scams draining bank balances, the risks are everywhere.

The good news? Adopting a few simple habits can make a huge difference to your safety online.

Whether you are scrolling social media, downloading an app, or checking your emails, these quick and practical steps will help protect your personal information and keep cyber criminals at bay.

1. Verify communication methods before engaging

Criminals are skilled at impersonating trusted brands, colleagues, and even loved ones. Before clicking links or responding, take a moment to verify the sender. Look out for spelling errors, unusual requests, or unfamiliar email domains. When in doubt, contact the organisation directly.

2. Be cautious where you submit your data

When registering for new apps or services, check whether the information being requested makes sense. A photo editing app should not need access to your address, passport, or bank details. Only share personal information with sources that you trust.

3. Avoid public Wi-Fi where possible

Public Wi-Fi networks are often insecure, making it easier for hackers to intercept your data. If you must use public Wi-Fi, avoid logging into sensitive accounts such as online banking. Consider using a trusted VPN for additional protection.

4. Use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

2FA adds a vital layer of extra security. Wherever possible, turn it on. Opt for the most secure options available, such as biometric verification or authentication apps. Text message codes are better than nothing, but authentication tools are harder to compromise.

5. Keep privacy settings tight on social platforms

Review your privacy settings on social media regularly. Reduce the amount of personal information you share publicly, including your location, birthday, or contact details. The less information available to cybercriminals, the harder it is for them to target you.

6. Update your devices and apps regularly

Software updates often include critical security fixes. Enable automatic updates on your devices and applications, especially those related to browsers, operating systems and security tools.

7. Create strong and unique passwords

Avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. Use a combination of letters, numbers and special characters. Password managers can help generate and store complex passwords securely for you.

8. Think before you click

If something seems too good to be true, it usually is. Be wary of pop-ups, unexpected attachments or promotional links. Clicking without checking could lead to malware installation or phishing scams.

9. Back up your data

Regular backups protect you from data loss due to ransomware, device failure or accidental deletion. Use both cloud and offline backup options where possible.

10. Educate yourself and stay alert

Cyber threats are constantly evolving. Keep up to date with the latest risks and guidance through trusted cyber safety resources. A bit of awareness can prevent a lot of damage.
